Cou La Tao Eco Village in Sigang, Tainan, Taiwan
Ecological Campaign
My animation workshop was set up at Tun Che Chen’s families organic farm. During the Little Forest Market, held monthly in Xigang which is close to busy roads, a large river and is well known for its farm land. A little pocket of nature strives to survive the test of time.
Action took place when the local government wanted to destroy the natural habitat and consume huge sections beside the current road, to make the road much wider to save less than 1 minute of time. The small spec of natural beauty is trying its best to be preserved by the famer TC who he, and his strong knit community of activists and eco warriors have battled and poured time, energy and love into trying to save the trees, the old railroad and the road plan to go ahead.
The workshop result is a follow up movie (watch below) as a direct result of raising awareness due to the longstanding battles of people’s right to nature, which is ongoing around the world and is having a huge detrimental affect on the future of earth.
See below some photos of the workshop, participants were directed to find loose leaves, flowers, sticks or anything to create a creature of their choice to then animate. After searching for materials we then embarked on painting each character to bring them to life.
After we were finished we then put our little creations to work and animated them very patiently and carefully as we moved and placed them intriguingly for each single picture taken.
After we had hundreds of photos we finally edited the movie and added sound recorded by the farm owner TC and his girlfriend Deedee. Have a look and see if you can spot any indigenous Taiwanese animals!
The local authorities wanted to construct a 6 lane highway that will eat away into the land either side of the road, going through the farm and taking up valuable habitat and old heritage sites to construct a road that will save only 1 minute in driving time (just off the other main road).
The people and animals want an easy and peaceful life.
There has been many attempts and tribulations in order for the plan to be changed. But sadly it didn’t happen and the road is in construction right now.
The workshop movie shows that the animals will still be happy together even though their home is being destroyed.
