Langaland Festival, set amongst the rolling hills of Dartmoor, Devon took place during July โ18.
The Animate the Earth workshop operated over two days, capturing the minds of young creative folk and slightly older, try-anything types.

We started by setting up the pitch, with our portrait artist Mark next to us we found a quite nice fence to display some art. Hannah Denholmโs beautifully crafted wood and painted paper-mache shrooms dotted all around the workshop.

All throughout the day revellers arrived intrigued and soon captivated by painting, mixing and watching their handiwork coming alive on the screen.
We had numerous children, parents, musicians, artists and more combining their own unique tastes within the workshop.
This lead to some interesting colours, patterns and innovate ideas about what to do. The workshop is very unconfined to any particular style as such, so we try to focus on primordial, abstract styles to allow people to become uncaged from their safety bubble and what they perceive it to look like.

We painted huge A1 pieces of paper and shot each picture around 2 seconds or more after some painting had been done. With stop motion animation, many photos are required in order to get a smooth playback, this is something Animate the Earth wants to focus on in the future, having workshops for more advanced students, as animation is really a great brain-buster!
The magic of Animate the Earth teaches children about rhythm and interaction. We focus on patience and forward thinking through the natural process of animation.

By applying this technique, children walk away with something that they imagined and collaborated on in the tangible world, coming to life in the physical realm. With the prospect of watching the animation at a later date after the festival with parents, friends or at school, it is something to anticipate with excitement and be proud when sharing the results.

The final movie we got from the animation was marvellous, please find the video to have a look. We would love to return to Langaland in the future for more chances to get creative and make animations together.
We would love to return to Langaland in the future, the festival was very special indeed.
