Mark Making Stop-Motion Workshop at Cien Artist Village

, , ,

Presenting the first hand painted, stop motion animation from the experimental, monochrome-mark making workshop at Cien Art Village.

I designed this workshop to be hands-on and collaborative, something animation doesn’t always offer. Children are steered away from the computer to drawing on a blank canvas with the other participants. This is a purposeful decision to allow the art and children to come together without the need for expensive equipment and technology.

As the workshop is still in it’s early development, I have been gained experience about letting the children ‘freestyle’ with their drawing. Offering different paint brushes and suggesting different patterns to diversify their art.

What is mark making, is it valuable and does it help us and our children learn? The answer is YES and YES!

Please have a read of this article to gain some insight into the different aspects of mark making if you are unfamiliar with the term:

Here is another article, analysing the effects of mark making on the brain using an MRI scanner whilst the subject is drawing:

I believe mark making is beneficial for the brain at any age, it’s fun too, however, these marks could be playing a much more important role in our early years of development. Please take a look at this article to understand more:

Well done to everyone who took part painting and animating. Thank you to the musicians for making some amazing experimental music to go with it 🎵
